Compton Acres

Nestled in Poole's prestigious Canford Cliffs is a hidden oasis of colour and nature. Compton Acres is a multi-themed collection of beautiful gardens, cafés, shops and event spaces, designed for relaxation and exploration. The themes include Japanese, woodland and Italian, each landscaped with beautiful explosions of flora, forna and sympathetic sculptures.

The thing that struck me about Compton Acres is the peacefulness of the astonishingly large gardens. You easily forget that you are in the middle of a busy residential area, just off of the main road to one of the most famous beaches in the world. You cannot hear the traffic, or hustle and bustle of the local shopping area. You can't even hear noise from the Italian Villa event space. You are lost in the buzz of bumble bees, rustling of trees and the soft hum of the breeze across ponds and flowers.

As I pushed the buggy easily around the buggy and wheelchair friendly paths, I encountered a few other visitors, but really felt like I was able to unwind in the tranquil solitude. Lily was absolutely mesmerised by the vibrant colours, delicate floral fragrances and sounds of nature and waterfalls. I enjoyed talking to her about what we could see, naming the flowers and explaining the different themes. There were so many benches and nooks to sit and reflect, or in our case breastfeed surrounded my glorious nature. We felt completely comfortable and were left alone to feed at our leisure.

My absolute favourite garden is the Japanese Garden, which includes stepping stones over the pool filled with Koi carp and the elegant focal point - the Tea House. There is something so calming about this garden and you discover something new every time you visit. This garden is just stunning from every vantage point.

After an afternoon of exploring and appreciating nature in its full glory, you will have worked up quite an appetite. There are two great cafés at Compton Acres; the Harbour View Cafe and the Main Cafe and Tea Room. We visited the Main Cafe and Tea Room for cream tea, which included generous servings of clotted cream, fruity jam and a fresh, warm scone. There was a high chair available for Lily and staff were so helpful when setting a place for her. There are also full afternoon tea options and on Sundays a full roast is available. I was amazed by the wide range of juices and soft drinks available, but the fully licensed cafe also offers great quality beers and wines.

I hope to come back soon for afternoon tea with my family and westie, after spending the morning getting lost in the expansive gardens at Compton Acres. Thanks for inviting Lily and I to visit, we thoroughly enjoyed our time here.
